Measure College and Career Readiness  — Beginning in Middle School

Maximizing your school resources—instructor time, money, and curricular changes—has never been more challenging or important. Only Houghton Mifflin Harcourt has the insight and data systems to help you track the college and career readiness starting at Grade 6. Data gathered from our reliable and evidence–based assessments can help you make important decisions by providing projected reports of student preparedness for success through Grade 12 and beyond.

    How it works

The Iowa Assessments generate readiness reports showing where students in Grades 6–12 land on the college and career preparedness scale, informing decisions related to curricula and teacher performance. In addition, individual student data helps identify students who may require intervention or advanced courses and programs, or those who would benefit from accelerated coursework.

    Why it works

Iowa Assessments are the only assessments that begin evaluating student preparedness for the ACT©/SAT© in Grade 6 – two years before any other existing assessment system.

Grades 6–8 are a critical time for skills development, so the ability to begin interventions or adjust curricula to ensure students are "on track" for success before they enter high school can go a long way toward improving overall student and school performance.

In addition, the longitudinal data system allows you to track students year over year and within the school year, so you can demonstrate immediate and long term gains in achievement at the same time.

    How do you track growth?

With increasing pressure on schools across the country to provide data showing student growth, you need a way to reliably monitor each student's progress across the entire K–12 continuum. That's why the robust vertical scale underlying the Iowa Assessments facilitates an enhanced Growth Model.

Learning is a continuous process, and individuals learn incrementally and at different rates. When we measure progress, we avoid applying arbitrary labels to students or placing them in buckets. Instead, by monitoring growth, we focus on setting long–term goals and understanding student progress towards college and career readiness. Using growth data can help you plan instruction and implement swift curriculum changes based on what students know and can do.

    Features and Benefits

    • Concordance to existing assessment data to facilitate longitudinal trend
    • Accurate longitudinal data reporting within and across school years
    • A vertical scale that provides a reliable and consistent measure of growth
    • Standard score growth continuum that provides more accurate data than other competing instruments
    • Enhanced tools for differentiation that accurately access the growth of low- and hight-performing students
    • Universal screening that can be used within the "Response to Intervention" framework

    Powerful Web-Based Reporting

ACSI Member Schools have access to the DataManager platform for web-based reporting. DataManager offers more flexibility in working with data than a static paper report, as well as the ability to create dynamic displays with the click of a mouse. Compare data by different classes, different buildings, or review summary data for content area totals. You also can drill down to individual tests and analyze performance on diagnostic skill clusters and use the information to inform instruction.

DataManager features robust Iowa Assessments reporting that includes the following:

ACT Aspire is the only assessment system that can provide data to track student progress toward college and career readiness from grade 3 through early high school that is anchored by the ACT test.

A Deeper Understanding of Student Readiness

ACT Aspire also provides additional measures of student success not found elsewhere, including:

    • A Progress with Text Complexity indicator for students who test with reading
    • An English/Language Arts score for those students who test in English, reading, and writing
    • A STEM score for students who test in science and mathematics
    • A Progress toward Career Readiness indicator for students who test in grades 8–10 that is directly tied to the ACT National Career Readiness Certificate
    • A predicted ACT Composite score and predicted ACT Subject Score for grades 9–10 (early high school)
    Periodic Assessments

    Periodic Assessments

    ACT Ordering Checklist

ACT Aspire® Periodic Assessments (classroom and interim) are designed to measure student understanding of the concepts and skills outlined in the ACT College and Career Readiness Standards and many state standards focused on college and career readiness. Periodic assessments help measure shorter–term student progress — providing supporting data for a more targeted and responsive program of instruction.

    ACT Periodic Brochure

Periodic assessments are available as a perfect complement to the ACT Aspire Summative Assessments or as an independent assessment program.

    • Online delivery
    • Subject areas: English, mathematics, reading, and science
    • Locally controlled administration
    • Integrated system of Classroom and Interim assessments
    • Leverages more than 50 years of ACT education and career readiness research for credibility, validity, and effectiveness

ACT Aspire Interim Assessments can be administered periodically throughout the course of an academic year. They supply educators with timely and instructionally valuable data that summative assessments are not designed to provide such as information about student progress toward learning goals and objectives that can be used for adapting instruction.  Interim assessments also help educators evaluate and monitor student performance, which allows time for intervention with struggling students or for enrichment for students who are excelling.

    ACT Interims

ACT Aspire Classroom Assessments can be used to assess knowledge before starting a new unit of study, to monitor student learning during ongoing instruction, and to check student outcomes or assess the need for corrective instruction. The flexible nature of these assessments allows teachers to interpret the best time for administration while providing short–term, guiding insights to student progress.

Summative Assessments, also part of the ACT Aspire Assessment System®, inform instruction and measure student progress. They are offered separately from the Periodic Assessments.

Measures Broad Range of Student Performance: The addition of more challenging items at each level helps reduce the need for out–of–level testing.

Professional Development and Support: Teachers and administrators may view interactive web content and videos, review pre–testing instructions, and learn instructional strategies based on student performance to help answer the "what's next" questions.

Reporting Options: Age and grade normative scores, local norms, separate and composite scores for ability batteries, predicted achievement scores, and the Ability Profile Score provide multiple data points for use in identification and instruction.

This course is designed to teach principles for Christian living from the example of the early church as recorded in Acts. A serious effort has been made to encourage students to apply the principles demonstrated in the lives and actions of the heroic men and women of Acts.

The student workbook contains engaging graphics and questions that direct students in their study. It also contains activities that guide students in theological issues, reflection, reasoning skills, and more. The teacher edition contains an answer key and teacher support information. How Far Can You Go? Straight Talk About Sexual Purity

How Far Can You Go? directs students to the Word of God for answers that go beyond catch phrases and pat answers. It offers biblical principles that challenge readers to authentic Christian living.

This study addresses the delicate topic in a straightforward yet sensitive manner. It moves beyond the ineffective command to "just say no" to sex. It raises the bar by encouraging, equipping, and empowering young people to develop the character trait of purity. When purity of heart becomes our foundation for behavior, our relationship with God is elevated to a higher level.

This resource includes a student book and a teacher edition/leader guide (designed to be used one day per week for nine weeks). Click here to download sample lessons.

Student Edition also available in Spanish.

The Life of Christ, 2nd Edition*

It includes application questions, personal assignments, and hypothetical case studies, and it is coordinated with a dedicated website that links students to additional information. The teacher guide includes an extensive resource section with learning exercises, maps, charts, glossaries, quizzes, and blackline masters, helping teachers lead students beyond facts to a deeper understanding through projects and class discussion.   Click here to download sample lessons.

Let God Be God: A Study of the Attributes of God

A study of the character and attributes of God, this course encourages teens to wrestle with questions they frequently ask in a framework that draws the answers from scripture. The course is designed on the premise that the more we come to know God through a careful study of His Word, the greater will be our challenge to maintain a right relationship with Him. The attributes are organized into helpful categories: the knowledge of God, the Trinity, God's unshared attributes, and God's shared attributes.

The workbook helps students tackle each attribute through appropriate exercises and activities and guides students in translating their knowledge into personal application. The teacher edition provides extensive lesson helps along with detailed content overviews, blackline masters, and assessment tools. Click here to download sample lessons.

Mastering Bible Study Skills: Tools for Investigating God's Word

The main teaching methods for the course are projects and exercises. Teacher materials include detailed lesson plans, blackline masters, PowerPoint presentations, lecture notes, grading rubrics for projects, and student answer keys for exercises and quizzes. In ELA/Literacy, the same domains are in evidence across most grade levels. However, the depth and complexity of learning requirements increase progressively across the grades. Scores are provided for domains by grade level.

ELA/Literacy items focus on higher order thinking skills such as summary, comparison, analysis, reasoning, and the use of text-based evidence. Passages are complex and challenging and presented in pairs, requiring close reading and enabling synthesis, analysis, and comparison. Students are presented with a mix of literary and informational passages, including science and social studies for grade 6 and above.

    RIA ELA Domains

    Mathematics Domains Assessed

In the chart below, you can see the math domains. Certain domains, such as Operations and Algebraic Thinking, are cornerstones for the more complex topics, such as Algebra, that come later. At each grade level in math, there are four to five domains which are of the greatest importance for proficiency in math.

Math items focus on the understanding of mathematical concepts, mathematical reasoning, and problem solving. Scores are provided by domains by grade level.

Linking the Riverside Interims to the Iowa Assessment

For those educators who elect to use the Iowa Assessments with the Riverside Interim Assessments as part of a comprehensive Balanced Assessment System, the Riverside Interim Assessments total score scales for ELA and Mathematics have been aligned to associated Iowa Assessments scores. The growth scale for the Riverside Interim Assessments has been defined using basic characteristics of the Iowa SS scale. Links between the growth scale and the Iowa Assessments scale itself have been established through a process referred to as "scale alignment" (Holland & Dorans, 20065). In this way, the Riverside Interim Assessments and the Iowa Assessments can be used together to monitor the growth of students over time. However, because the Riverside Interim Assessments and the Iowa Assessments measure related but slightly different constructs, estimated ranges of probable Iowa Assessments scores are provided for each Riverside Interim Assessments score in lieu of actual point estimates.

As shown below, the Student Profile – Balanced Assessment Line Graph presents results from Iowa Assessments and Riverside Interim Assessments and allows you to set growth goals for a student and track the student's progress over time. A blue line indicates the growth goal that you set for the student. The scores for each test administration appear as red or green, indicating that the student is above or below the growth goal, respectively. For comparison purposes, the graphs also display a gray line representing the growth in achievement for the average student in the nation over the same period of time.

    RIA Student Profile

    Powerful Online Reporting

Designed for ease–of–use by teachers, administrators, and district personnel, online reporting via DataManager empowers educators to make data–driven decisions and evaluate effectiveness. See below to view a few sample reports for the Riverside Interim Assessments.

Understanding the Times offers a fascinating, comprehensive look at how the tenets of the Christian worldview compares with five major competing worldviews of our day: Islam, Secularism, Marxism, New Spirituality, and Postmodernism.

Missio Dei: Joining God on the Adventure of a Lifetime

This course includes three essential components:

    • The student edition introduces the term Missio Dei — 'Mission of God.' It provides opportunities for students to explore and engage in God's mission as the foundation for the story of the Bible, as the lens through which we all relate to others cross-culturally, as the centerpiece of history, and as the driving force for living "missionally" in whatever context we find ourselves.

    • The teacher edition will guide you step-by-step through the teaching of the material and through the leading of various activities and assignments.

    • The journal (Missio Dei: The Journey) was developed as a companion piece and an integral part of the student's study. The journal is filled with article excerpts, Bible verses, quotations, places for reflection, and activities directly related to the lessons.

    Timeless Truth

This apologetics course carefully walks students through the answers to these important questions — What is truth? Where can truth be found? Is the Bible reliable and relevant? Before young people can rely on the Bible, they must be assured of its truth. Timeless Truth directs students in a thoughtful study of the authenticity, reliability, and authority of the Bible. Students can apply what they learn as they hear a wide range of claims in the secular environment.

The teacher edition includes evaluation materials, an answer key, blackline masters, and an appendix that presents supplementary readings. Click here to download sample lessons.

Life-Shaping Decisions: Applying God's Word to Career Planning

Excitement can turn to disillusionment as a teen pursues career plans without God's wisdom for living and working. Only a path chosen according to God's Word can bring ultimate, lasting success.

This course challenges students with a biblical concept of career stewardship while providing resources to help them build their own career plans wisely and faithfully. The lessons will lead them to discover their talents, to understand important principles of decision making, and to determine the will of God. This course can easily be used in conjunction with the school's guidance program. Click here to download sample lessons.

Gain Clear Information to Target Instruction

Meaningful assessment does more than measure. It provides direction to guide instruction. InView is an innovative cognitive skills tests that can map student strengths, reveal hidden abilities, and point the way to new learning opportunities. When you know what your students know and can do, you can teach to your students' needs.

    Challenge:

How are your students performing relative to their own potential and to other student groups? How can you identify achievement gaps, Gifted and Talented students, and latent learning problems?

    Solution:

InView measures the reasoning skills of students in Grades 2-12 that are most directly related to academic success-skills that help you measure abilities accurately, target learning needs or problems, and motivate students to grow.

    Using InView You Gain:

    • An accurate and reliable measure of inductive and deductive reasoning processes - abilities crucial for academic success
    • A valuable measure of quantitative reasoning, not reliant on math questions and free of gender bias
    • Insightful information about student skills that are valid predictors of student academic success
    • The ability to identify students for placement in the most appropriate learning programs
    • Translate aptitude into academic success

    Translate Aptitude into Academic Success

When teamed with quality achievement test like TerraNova®, Third Edition, InView provides anticipated-achievement scores for individual students and groups, allowing you to compare your students' achievement with that of other students of the same age, grade, and ability-and determine whether your students are achieving to their full potential. This information can help you use achievement results to guide instruction and improve learning opportunities.

Cognitive Skills Index (CSI) scores from InView provide a highly reliable measure of overall academic aptitude, which is valuable information for guidance, activities planning, and special program identification.

Anticipated Achievement scores allow you to compare student performance with that of similar individuals and groups. These scores are a powerful tool. Use them to improve instruction, address specific student strengths and needs, and provide valuable information for parent-teacher conferences.

    Character Foundations

    (Kindergarten through Grade 6)

The ACSI Character Foundations Textbook series is a creative and stimulating program of instruction that focuses on godly character traits in the lives of students in kindergarten through grade six.

In this series, God is presented as the source and strength of character. Students and teachers are encouraged to respond to Him in obedience, worship, and admiration. Students will step into the quality being studied by observing behavior, discussing consequences, and participating in activities designed to strengthen their ability to understand and demonstrate each quality.

Studying God as the source and strength of character is a delight. Character Foundation is a powerful and engaging character training program that looks to the Bible for content and provides practical and creative lessons. Core traits are taught simultaneously throughout the grade levels, allowing your school to unify its themes for chapels.

    • Parent communicators provide ideas for reinforcing concepts and spiritual truths at home. Practical application themes are unique to each grade level.
    • Memory verses help illustrate and embed concepts.
    • Lower-grade-level studies of a variety of Bible characters are followed in the upper grades by in-depth studies of individual Bible characters.

  • Developing critical thinking skills through scientific inquiry and investigation
  • Appropriately rigorous content that prepares students for future science studies
  • Learning the language and processes of science
  • Classroom activities that help to shape a biblical worldview in the mind and heart of each student

  • Student Notebooks:

In the full-color student books (levels 1–3), each chapter becomes a take-home booklet for every student.

At the upper elementary levels (grades 4–6), the science series introduces a unique format that provides an enriched learning experience for students.

This format has two essential components:

    • A full-color student textbook (softcover)
    • A science notebook (consumable) — an essential and necessary component filled with multiple hands-on application activities for every chapter

    Samplers

The intent of a sampler is to provide the customer with an example of the content and look of the teacher edition of specific grade level within a series. Typically included are: table of contents, a sample test, a blackline master, lesson preparation and directed instructions, review suggestions, reduced student pages, and more. Some samplers will have actual full-size student edition pages in them, but not all.

Christian School Program (CSP) Score Reports Package

A comprehensive assessment program produces considerable data. Test results are most useful when they are organized in a way that allows teachers and other educators to focus on the information most relevant to them. Reports for the Complete Battery of TerraNova 3 are designed to meet this need by making it easier to use test results for educational purposes. The reports inform students and their parents/guardians of test results, assess the achievement of individuals and groups of students, and compare the performance of classes within a school. Schools will receive the reports listed below with the Christian School Program Scoring Package for the Spring testing season.

NOTE: The sample reports include both the TerraNova 3, Complete Battery and the PLUS tests content areas. If a school only administers the Complete Battery, there are fewer content areas displayed on the reports. The reporting package also includes Assessment Data Online, where schools can pull several customized reports. Bible Assessment data are reported separately.

    About Us

A Brief History of Publishing at ACSI

In 1978, ACSI was founded. Dr. Paul Kienel and Dr. Roy Lowrie, prolific writers and ACSI's first executives, began providing resources to educators and parents to help them understand the rapidly growing Christian school movement.

In the mid-1980s, the demand for relevant, high quality Christian textbooks and resources skyrocketed. ACSI entered the arena intentionally and eagerly, despite two prominent publishers already crowding the industry.

In 2003, ACSI rebranded its publishing division as Purposeful Design Publications, reflecting the Association's commitment to provide resources that honor and glorify a purposeful God and meet the instructional needs of Christian school educators and students.

    Today, Purposeful Design Publications exists:

    • To equip teachers with the very best textbooks and resources for their classroom;
    • To inspire educators and students to be lifelong learners, spiritually and academically; and
    • To serve the Christian school movement effectively.

How do I get the bar graph to show on the screen?
Instructions and required links are provided on the landing page in Assessment Data Online.

When will my school have access to ADOL?

What if I have not received the DRC email with the usernames/passwords and parent letters?
Please contact Member Care to have it resent by DRC.

How do I create an individual profile report for students in Assessment Data Online?
The administrator and teacher are able to access and print an individual student report in Assessment Data Online. The administrator will use the roster report located in the TerraNova 3 menu on the right side of the portal, and the teacher will use the list of students on their main dashboard. From the administrator portal student roster report, or the teacher dashboard, please click on the student's name. An Individual Profile Report will open and can be downloaded as a pdf or Excel file, and then printed. Both a TerraNova 3 and TerraNova 3 with InView report are available in the system.

How do I access and download the same data received in the paper reports?
Use the Guide to Assessment Data Online to navigate the system and create reports. To help find the dashboard comparisons for the paper reports, refer to the Assessment Data Online Score Reports and Basic Score Interpretations pdf linked here. What if a parent has an account and is unable to retrieve their username or reset the password?
The school is able to retrieve a user name and reset the password for a parent account. Please log in through the administrator account. Then, follow the steps below:

    1. On the left side, select the fifth icon down, which shows a "P" for parents. Once the page refreshes, the User ID and parent name is found in the first two columns.
    2. Use the "Search" box above the "Actions" section to find the parent's name or User ID.
    3. Once located, provide the parent with their User ID or select the lock icon on the right side and follow the prompt to reset the password.

Why did ACSI choose the TerraNova, Third Edition, for the Christian School Program (CSP)- ACSI’s achievement test program?

CTB (California Testing Bureau), the publisher of TerraNova, Third Edition, has almost 90 years of experience with proven research and development expertise in the educational measurement field. CTB’s research staff includes more than 20 doctorate-level research scientists as well as statistical analysts and research implementation specialists. CTB is well known and respected for the production and publishing of solid validity and technically defensible test score results.

In the summer of 2015, Data Recognition Corporation (DRC) acquired CTB’s statewide custom business and summative shelf assessment products, including TerraNova 3. DRC has provided customized, full-service assessment services to the K–12 education market for more than 35 years. The company is known for facilitating the transition to online assessment and delivering innovative, highly reliable technology solutions to state departments of education nationwide. This acquisition will expand DRC’s presence in the United States as CTB serves approximately 8 million students across the country.

TerraNova 3 is one of the most respected and widely used achievement tests, measuring mastery in the core subjects. Its design is fresh and user-friendly, and its content is current. TerraNova 3 provides detailed diagnostic information, norm- and criterion-referenced scores, and performance-level data.

Schools are able access test results online within about five days of the DRC/CTB Scoring Center’s receipt of test materials. Assessment Data Online and Assessment Data Online for Parents, the online reporting system, provides administrators and teachers with the graphic tools for disaggregation of individual and group data, discussions for school improvement, student growth and progress, and much more. A Parent Network, Assessment Data Online for Parents, is also available. Paper reports are shipped to schools within 10 days of the receipt of test materials at the DRC/CTB Scoring Center. Assessment Data Online and paper reports are both included in the Christian School Program Scoring Package.

We are excited about the enhanced services that this partnership provides. DRC/CTB has come alongside ACSI to provide ongoing professional development opportunities through the venues of webinars, regional and site workshops, and seminar conventions. Many of these activities are at no cost to participants in the Christian School Program.

Decreased cost for schools is another major reason ACSI chose TerraNova 3.

    Return to top of page.

Why did ACSI change to a different achievement test vendor in 2011–12?

ACSI’s goal is to provide a high-quality current assessment that includes helpful and technical resources at a minimal cost. With this goal in mind, ACSI researched testing companies and their products and services, and then made the decision to transition to a test that best fits these criteria.

    Return to top of page.

    When was TerraNova 3 developed?

TerraNova 3 was published in 2007; it compares student performance using nationally representative, empirical, 2007 norms. In 2014 ACSI’s assessment program transitioned to updated 2011 national comparisons (norms). National norms will be updated again in 2018.

    Return to top of page.

Is a cognitive abilities assessment also available in the Christian School Program?

Yes. There are two additional tests designed to measure cognitive skills and abilities: the Primary Test of Cognitive Skills (PTCS), for ages 5–7, and InView for grades 2–12. Schools can use results of these two tests to diagnose possible learning disabilities, to plan placement, and to develop effective instructional programs. When used with TerraNova 3, both tests provide anticipated-achievement scores.

    Return to top of page.

Does TerraNova 3, Christian School Program Edition, include a Bible assessment subtest?

Yes. The Bible Assessment Subtest was reviewed for question clarity and is included in TerraNova 3, Christian School Program Edition.

    Return to top of page.

How does TerraNova 3 align with state and national standards?

TerraNova 3 aligns to state standards and to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) framework.

    • Reading item content aligns with the standards of the International Reading Association (IRA), NAEP, and the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).
    • Language item content assesses students’ skills in the key components of language proficiency—understanding of language structure, familiarity with standard written English conventions and rules, and knowledge of syntactic constructions and paragraph development.
    • Mathematics assessments include items that are set in real-world contexts with contemporary topics suggested by teachers and students. Items are aligned to the standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM).
    • Science assessments are based on national science standards and frameworks. They assess student understanding relative to core science content areas: Life Science, Earth Science, Physical Science, and Nature of Science/Science Inquiry.
    • Social Studies assessments reflect the guidelines of the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) and emphasize the interrelationships of history, geography, governments, and economics.
    Return to top of page.

How does TerraNova 3 align with Common Core State Standards?

TerraNova 3 provides 2011 norms- the most recent empirical norms available in any norm-referenced test. Since it was developed in 2007, TerraNova 3 was not designed to measure or align to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The CCSS were developed in 2010, so in some grades (mostly upper) and subjects, TerraNova 3 will not closely match the common core.

TerraNova 3 is aligned as noted in the previous question and reflects a national consensus curriculum of what students should know and be able to do in each subject and at each grade level. There are many Christian, parochial, and public schools throughout the nation that use TerraNova 3 and will continue to do so.

    Return to top of page.

With what standards does the Bible Assessment Subtest align?

The Bible Assessment Subtest reflects a scope and sequence that was developed by researching the most commonly used Bible textbooks in Christian schools. As TerraNova 3 standards do not necessarily align with each individual school’s curriculum, neither will the Bible Assessment Subtest. ACSI publishes a valuable resource, The Bible Assessment Administrator’s Guide, which includes the test’s scope and sequence and helpful recommendations for connecting scoring data to Bible instruction. This resource is included in the schools test materials order.

    Return to top of page.

What kinds of scores are available for TerraNova 3?

The following are types of scores used to report the TerraNova3/InView test results:

    • Scaled score
    • National Percentile Rank and Stanine
    • Christian School Program Percentile Rank
    • Normal Curve Equivalent
    • Grade Equivalent
    • Cognitive Skills Index (PTCS and InView)
    • Anticipated Achievement Score (PTCS and InView)
    • Objectives Performance Index
    • Lexile for grades 1–8
    Return to top of page.

What kinds of score reports do I receive?

When your school chooses to have tests machine scored, you automatically receive the Christian School Program Scoring Package, which is described under the Assessment Support tab at www.purposefuldesign.com. Assessment Data Online is also included in the Christian School Program Scoring Package.

    Return to top of page.

Can my school exclude students from the traditional student results (i.e., home school students, students with learning disabilities, English language learners)?

TerraNova 3 was developed as an inclusive assessment, meaning that non-traditional students, e.g., English language learners, students with IEPs, are included in the norming process. These students were allowed to take the test using appropriate accommodations. For this reason DRC/CTB discourages schools from excluding students.

However, it is understood that schools may have legitimate reasons for wanting to view traditional student scores apart from non-traditional students. The Christian School Program provides two ways for schools to do this.

    • Complete the M Column codes in the student data section of the test booklet/answer sheet. Instructions are found in the Test Coordinator’s Manual. This information will allow schools to disaggregate groups of students within Assessment Data Online.

    and/or

    • Follow the packaging instructions in the Test Coordinator’s Manual for “Excluded Students.” This process only effects group paper reports, not Assessment Data Online, and is not highly recommended.

Testing accommodations are also allowed and detailed in the Assessment Accommodations Supplement.

    Return to top of page.

Can schools compare TerraNova 3 test results to students’ previous results with the Stanford 10?

Yes. DRC/CTB developed a linking study for Stanford 10 (2011 ACSI administration) and TerraNova 3 (2012 ACSI administration). The study will be in the form of a table comparing performance levels using cut scale scores and percentiles. This table is accessible at www.puposefuldesign.com, under Assessment Support, and on Assessment Data Online.

Listed below are some reasons schools may observe a drop in scores from Stanford 10 to TerraNova 3:

    • Newer test norms – It is very common to see a drop in scores when shifting to new norms (although these are usually minor, single-digit shifts).
    • Differences in test design – SAT 10 is a more traditional achievement test design; TerraNova 3 is specifically designed to include more higher-order thinking skills than the traditional achievement test.
    • Differences in test content – Every test is a sample of the domain being assessed, so TerraNova 3 may have a challenging sample of possible items, or it may reflect that after years of administering the SAT 10, teachers naturally align their curriculum to the assessment they are and have been using. Switching from SAT 10 to TerraNova 3 provides schools with the opportunity to discover holes that have developed in their curriculum over the years.
    • Differences in scoring approach – SAT 10 uses a 1-parameter Rasch model; TerraNova 3 uses a 3-parameter Item Response Theory model. Three parameter IRT is considered to give more accurate results for individual students and groups with small numbers.
    Return to top of page.

Are Christian School Program norms available?

Yes. Each year student results are compared with the previous year’s Christian School Program results. Schools may also make comparisons to their ACSI region and partner organization results.

    Return to top of page.

How do I access Assessment Data Online?

Once your school’s tests are scored, DRC/CTB will send you an email providing Assessment Data Online access information. If you are unable to locate this email, you may call ACSI Member Care at 800-367-0798 for assistance.

    Return to top of page.

Which grade levels does TerraNova 3 test?

TerraNova 3 may be administered to grades K–12 (or Levels 10 – 22).

    Return to top of page.

Is TerraNova 3 a timed test?

Yes. TerraNova 3 is designed to minimize the effect of speededness* and maximize the validity and instructional relevance of the assessment results. To ensure the most valid and useful measures of achievement possible, DRC/CTB set appropriate administration time limits that facilitate student completion.
*The effect that results when a student may guess randomly or may be unable to demonstrate what they truly know and can do because of time constraints.

    Return to top of page.

Are the TerraNova 3 subtests all multiple-choice?

Yes. TerraNova 3 uses selected-response (multiple-choice) items to provide detailed comparative and diagnostic information.

    Return to top of page.

When is the Christian School Program testing window?

There are two testing windows: Fall testing which takes place in October and Spring testing which takes place in April*.

*Although spring testing is scheduled to take place between April 1 and April 30, testing may be scheduled earlier. The spring empirical window is equal to instructional days 136 through 160. If your school has completed 136 days of instruction for the year, it is within the empirical norm window and can begin testing. Schools that send their documents in for scoring earlier will receive their reports earlier. The scoring center must receive completed test books and answer documents no later than May 31. Documents received after June 1cannot be included in the Christian School Program norms.

    Return to top of page.

Is there a deadline for returning tests to be scored?

Yes. Tests must be received at the scoring center before June 1. After a very brief grace period, tests will be returned to the school unscored. Please note all important program deadlines. These can be found in the Test Coordinator’s Manual, and under the Assessment Support tab at www.purposefuldesign.com.

    Return to top of page.

How do I order TerraNova 3 test materials?

    Return to top of page.

What is the deadline for ordering TerraNova 3 test materials?

Schools will want to take advantage of previous year pricing by ordering before the early December deadline each year. Schools may order materials any time before spring testing, but need to understand that the earlier they order the better. Please note all important program deadlines. These can be found in the Test Coordinator’s Manual and under the Assessment Support tab at www.purposefuldesign.com.

    Return to top of page.

Are optional reports available? How do I order them?

Yes, optional reports are available and a list of these reports may be found in Online Enrollment and under the Assessment Support tab at www.purposefuldesign.com. Optional reports are ordered when completing OE, but may also be requested by contacting ACSI Member Care.

    Return to top of page.

What is Online Enrollment for machine scoring?

Online Enrollment (OE) is a required process for all schools using machine scoring and provides DRC/CTB’s scoring center with important information so that it can have a check system in place when tests finally arrive to be scored. OE provides for quality control and allows for more accurate processing and timely turnaround of scoring.
Once your materials order is placed, you will need to complete OE for machine scoring. You will receive an email from ACSI (sent to the email address that you enter on your materials order). This email will provide directions for accessing OE.

    • In OE you will be asked to provide some general information about your school and testing program.
    • If you purchase Precoding Services, you will enter student demographic data.
    • You may order optional reports (these are available in addition to your Christian School Program Scoring Package of reports that comes automatically to all schools in this testing program).
    • You may select to enter data in one of two OE windows, and you may enter and adjust data throughout that window. If you are testing in March, be sure to use the first window, so that your Test Coordinator Kit arrives in plenty of time before testing. In any case it is recommended that schools order materials and complete OE as early as possible.
    • Your school’s customized Test Coordinator’s Kit will be mailed from DRC/CTB shortly after the close of the OE window you use. The kit includes important information about administering the test, packaging instructions, and scoring center labels.
    Return to top of page.

Can our school send tests in to be scored without completing Online Enrollment (OE)?

No. OE is required for machine scoring. If tests are received at the scoring center without proper forms and labels, they will be returned to the school to repackage and ship.

    Return to top of page.

    What are Precoding Services?

Precoding Services provide your school with student labels for test booklets/answer sheets that are precoded with student identification data, such as name, class, birth date, test level, school/campus, ID number, and other special codes. Schools may order precoding and enter student data for the precoded labels through Online Enrollment. DRC/CTB is providing several new options for entering your student biographical data. Please allow 4-6 weeks after the close of the OE window you use for the precoding process to be completed and bar code labels shipped to you.
    Precoded student labels:

    • Reduce test administration time.
    • Eliminate errors in data entry of student information that could cost your school reprinting fees.
    • Simplify 6-digit entry of student ID numbers (Student ID numbers will allow you to observe individual student growth from year to year on ACSI Data Online.)
    Return to top of page.

Does DRC/CTB offer a scope and sequence for each grade level?

Yes. A resource entitled Teacher’s Guide for TerraNova, Third Edition includes a scope and sequence listing objectives and subskills for all subtests at all grade levels. The Teacher’s Guide may be purchased through ACSI.

    Return to top of page.

What kinds of resources are available for schools that administer TerraNova 3?

Through ACSI schools may access many DRC/CTB resources that help educators and parents make the best use of TerraNova 3 test results including the Teacher’s Guide to TerraNova, Third Edition, a comprehensive guide that explains the purposes of standardized testing and provides general guidelines for interpreting and using test results. Other helpful resources include Classroom Connections, the Instructional Resource Kit, and Beyond the Numbers.

    Return to top of page.

What kinds of assessment professional development are available through ACSI?

ACSI offers live and recorded webinars, and site and regional workshops. For more information visit www.purposefuldesign.com and select the Assessment Support tab.

    Return to top of page.

Are there diagnostic tests, school-readiness tests, career-guidance tests, language-proficiency tests, etc., available in this program?

ACSI continues to work with DRC/CTB to provide an array of testing products and services that will enhance a school’s capacity to evaluate student abilities. Currently optional assessments and tutorials include:

    • Early Learner- PreK – 3
      • Fox Letters and Numbers- Monitor early learners’ development of mathematics and reading concepts.
