Teacher Edition

One of the strengths of the Purposeful Design Spelling is the ease with which it is integrated into any language arts series. Explicit instruction in spelling is solidly based in educational research.

The following is a list of the skills, strategies, and outcomes that are central to the instructional program found in Purposeful Design Spelling:

  • Phonetic instruction and decoding and encoding skills promote spellers and better readers.
  • Reading and writing skills are strengthened.
  • Emphasis on high-frequency word lists builds confidence in emerging spellers.
  • Content words can be added to weekly lessons.

This series approaches spelling as a critical literacy skill that strengthens reading and writing ability. Spelling strategies such as word sorting by phonetic pattern, developing vocabulary through word study, and using the writing process to compose original stories prevade the books.
